Spain´s newest travel destination, the Región de Murcia International Airport, is on track to open it´s doors to commercial flight traffic on 15th January 2019.
Corvera airport will be an international airport and as such will be bigger and offer more facilities and services than the nearby Murcia San Javier airport. The San Javier airport will close and return to military use and the Corvera airport will replace the San Javier airport as the main airport for the region of Murcia. As such the new airport will be known as the Aeropuerto Internacional Region de Murcia, or the Region of Murcia International Airport.
As of December 2018 there are a number of flight routes and airlines that have already announced plans to fly in and out of Corvera airport. As the airport will replace San Javier airport and will also be run by AENA, it is largely expected to cover most, if not all of the existing routes dealt with at San Javier, but with the additional scope to handle many more routes too.
In the second half of 2019 the number of flights and destinations will further increase.

The new airport provides a genuine alternative to Alicante-Elche International airport, especially for travel destinations in Spain south of the city of Torrevieja. Murcia´s new airport lies 47.6km´s from La Zenia, almost equidistant to Alicante-Elche at 49.0 km´s driving distance.
